"Dear Mr. Vernon,… we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us - in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain... and an athlete... and a basket case... a princess... and a criminal... Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club."
Thanks John Hughes.
I want everyone to experience the sense of freedom that comes with knowing who they are, their true self, unhindered by constructs and convention.
To acknowledge that labels, stereotypes, and biases are a reflection on the ones passing judgment or upholding them rather than identifying any truth about a person.
Oh yah and HEY! My name is Brittany Ginnever and my prounouns are she/her. After finding my own yoga practice, I have come to see yoga as a tool to help find, empower, and reflect on all aspects of self and community.
In 2013 I completed my 200hrs with Oxygen Yoga and Fitness and shortly after started teaching yoga full time. Since then, I have gone on to become a 200hr E-RYT and completed Susanna Barkataki’s Embrace Yoga’s Roots 300YTT with Ignite Yoga and Wellness Institute.
My additional trainings and certifications include:
Teen Yoga – Girlvana Yoga , Trauma Informed Yoga Core Training Level I – Yoga Outreach , Restorative Touch in Yoga – The Feelosophy, Movr Methodology – Movr Method , Spiritual Activism 101 – Rachel Ricketts
My classes are available to all with space for students to find the joy and freedom in creating their own practice on and off the mat.
My classes are about honouring the good, the bad, and the somewhere in between. Sometimes life is butterflies and rainbows and sometimes it sucks. I'm here for all of that. It is my intention to encourage real and honest connection to self and community. As much as yoga and fitness can be about growth, it is also about finding contentment in who you are right now and recognizing that you are enough. I often ask at the start of class for you to ask yourself if this is a day you came to challenge yourself or a day you just needed to show up on your mat - you should really also ask if this is a day you should instead be at home watching TV or taking a nap, 'cause listen most of have seen or experienced the drill/bootcamp sergeant vibe. Yeah that's not my thing. You do you. I'll be your biggest cheerleader as you practice personal agency and really listen to your physical, mental, and spiritual needs.
Oh and let's all do this together. Did you know moving actually makes it easier to connect to others. It's brain chemicals and stuff. Science. Look it up. Creating community is one of the most important parts of teaching for me. Facilitating learning about ourselves and learning from and about others. This is why I believe in the power of yoga and fitness to create social change. The studio really is a microcosm of what is going on in the world. So what does that mean you can expect from me? Trauma-informed language that recognizes body neutrality and privilege. I can't promise a safe space for everyone who walks into my class, but I can promise a brave space, a space that not only listens, but acts, as the experiences of others are shared. As a cisgender, heterosexual, white, able-bodied, thin, middle class female, the "health and wellness" industry is basically built to serve me and honestly it still sometimes makes me feel like shit about myself. It's time to change that for EVERYONE, not only on the mat but off! SO LET'S GO!
